All items can be upgraded up to five times, except for hero gear that can be upgraded up to eight times. Every each time you upgrade an item, it is given the chance to fail. The rate of failure increases as you go beyond the maximum amount of upgrades. Failures can result in the item reverting to its initial state, which requires the player to purchase more resources than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum number. If an item is not able to upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it has gained, such as the chance to crit damage to attack, additional effects (such as an increase in healing over time or reloading speed). The player will be able to use their weapon or armor after the failure. Whenever an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied in order from lowest to highest. This means that if a weapon gains a crit chance increase that it will be applied before any damage from attacks increases. A new attribute known as Slots has been added to the item definition and the value is computed every time an upgrade is made. The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is based on the rarity rating as well as the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading equipment that is not premium is equal to the value of the base item. Premium items could have different upgrade requirements from regular gear. For example, they may need less sowels, however they may require more minerals and orons. In addition to the upgrade cost mentioned above, each equipment upgrade requires an individual amount of ingredients for upgrading.
